Magnesium Coprecipitation with Calcite at Low Supersaturation: Implications for Mg-Enriched Water in Calcareous Soils

نویسندگان

چکیده

The concentrations of magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) in natural aqueous environments are controlled by sorption dissolution–precipitation reactions. Ca binding calcareous soils depends on the degree solution saturation with respect to CaCO3. Mg may be bound precipitating calcite. Here, we investigated incorporation into calcite via recrystallization vaterite, which simulates a very low supersaturation wide range ratios pH conditions. Increasing (0.2 10) decreased partition coefficient from 0.03 0.005. An approximate thermodynamic mixing parameter (Guggenheim a0 = 3.3 ± 0.2), that is valid for dilute systems was derived experiments at lowest initial ratio (i.e., 0.2). At elevated ratios, aragonite preferentially formed, indicating kinetic controls partitioning Mg-calcite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX) analyses indicated not incorporated aragonite. model suggests ?1) Mg-calcite becomes unstable relative pure Finally, our results suggest abiotic only effective removal like soil solution, if already low.

Reevaluation of Calcite Supersaturation in Soils

The calcite saturation status of soil-water systems in semiarid regions was reexantined taking into consideration organic ligand alkalinity and Ca-organic complexation. These factors have been forwarded as the reason for earlier reports of calcite Supersaturation in soilwater systems. We examined groundwaters beneath irrigated lands, soil-water suspensions in the laboratory using four soils and...

Neptunium(V) Coprecipitation with Calcite

Coprecipitation experiments of Np(V) and U(VI) with calcite were performed in mixed-flow reactors under steady state conditions at room temperature for up to 400 h at precipitation rates of 1.0 × 10-8 to 6.8 × 10-8 mol/(m2 s). The saturation index with respect to calcite varied between 0.04 and 0.95. Initial Np(V) or U(VI) concentrations were 1 μmol/L, 0.01 mol/L NaCl was used as background ele...

Correcting Magnesium Deficiency of Limes Grown on Calcareous Soils with Magnesium Nitrate1

Marcotted 'Persian' (Tahiti*) lime trees with severe magnesium deficiency were sprayed with magnesium nitrate at 3 concentrations (1.75, 3.50, and 5.25 pounds of MgO/100 gallons of water). Three applications were made between March and September, 1967. Most of the magne sium deficiency symptoms disappeared after 2 sprays. The trees were completely green after the third spray, regardless of the ...

Calcite Dissolution by Brevibacterium sp. SOTI06: A Futuristic Approach for the Reclamation of Calcareous Sodic Soils

Assessing the ability of soil microorganisms to dissolute poorly soluble native calcite to supply Ca2+ is a new area to be explored in reclaiming sodic soils by supplying adequate Ca2+ and reducing the recurrent sodicity. Hence, the present study aimed to isolate a calcite dissolving bacteria (CDB) from calcareous sodic soils and to understand the mechanism of calcite dissolution. Of the 33 CDB...

Calcite Supersaturation in Soils as a Result of Organic Matter Mineralization

Solutions equilibrated with soils under laboratory conditions often exhibit Ca and CO^~ activities that exceed calcite saturation. This supersaturation has been attributed to various possibilities, none of which have been fully able to explain the phenomenon. In this study we report on the attainment of calcite supersaturation in calcite + water + organic matter systems under controlled CO2 con...
